Brief History • established in 1972 • Funded by NSF since 1976 • acquired U.W. core collection in 1990 • 3 facility expansions • 1994 expansion • new describing lab • 36,000 cu.ft. refrigerator space • 1998 purchased Geotek MST • 2001 added line scan camera to MST • 2007 new track for line scan camera • 2009 New 4000 cu.ft. refrigerator • 2010 Added 1350 cu.ft. Walk-In freezer • 2010 new paleomagnetic point source added to camera track • 2012 developed MGR website with interactive capabilities • 2012 founding member of IGSN e.V. • 2013 acquired 2 Motorola bar code scanners (one remote) for reading QR codes
Repository Holdings • Over 6100 cores, almost 16,000M of mud • Almost 5500 dredges, over 10,000 rocks • About 2200 Manganese Nodules • Over 1600 sediment trap samples • Both wet splits in formalin and dry material
Older Cores • In past 5 years we distributed just under 3,000 samples from cores taken before 1998 (15years ago) • Oldest core sample distributed this year taken in 1965 W7905A-147P Sec.4 544-605cm Arch
