Current COAS Arctic Projects Kelly Falkner: fate of river waters and other water types in the Arctic and sub-polar oceans. - North Pole Environmental Observatory (NPEO) 2000- - Arctic-SubArctic Ocean Fluxes (ASOF):Variability and Forcing of Fluxes through Nares Strait and Jones Sound: A Freshwater Emphasis,with Roger Samelson & Marta Torres, 2003 - Ev & Barry Sherr: roles of heterotrophic microbes in arctic marine food webs - Shelf-Basin Interactions: collaborative project with zooplankton ecologists to evaluate roles of herbivorous protists. 2002-

COAS suggestions for ARCUS • Expand Arctic research infrastructure: ship & shore bases, logistics support • Continue/expand Arctic safety training courses • Inclusion of indigenous peoples: Set up committee to examine how to involve native stakeholders in Arctic research planning, execution, impacts, and results
