Guide to Electronics Day 1
Introduction • Instructions • Demonstration Content
Day 1 – Knowing the basics • Day 2 – Learning the Intermediate • Day 3 – Application of knowledge • Day 4 – Preparation • Day 5 – Presentation Introduction
Here’s what we will be doing today: • Learning what our context of Electronics are • Understanding the purpose of Electronics in the modern world • Exposure to the different components used in a gadget • Knowing their functions • Try it yourself! • Hopefully, you would be able to complete your own gadget! Introduction – Day 1
An electronic, in this case, refers to a gadget or device made with different components and electrical circuits to serve a purpose. • Things in the world you see is not so simple… • Show counter Context
Make do with the available resources to construct a gadget or device with a purpose. • Improvise and innovate. • Create and construct. Purpose
Here are some of the components we will be using for the building of our gadgets in the later part of the sabbatical. Exposure
A plastic board with holes • Interconnected wires underneath (demo) • Originated from wooden cutting boards used in the 1980s which people will connect copper wires underneath it and dig holes on the top • Good for prototyping Breadboard
An prototyping board • 16MHz • USB, Battery, or AC powerd • Programmable • Supports many devices (as you would see) • Has both digital and analog IO (in/out put) Arduino
Light Emitting Diode • A type of diode • Emits light • Uses a semiconductor chip (Not silicon!) to produce light • Different wavelength according to semiconductor used • We have Green, Red, White, Blue, Ultraviolet, Infra Red (No kidding, yes, we do have IR and UV), Seven-segment displays L.E.Ds
Resists electrical current • Resistance measured in Ohms (Ω) • Reduces the current flow in a circuit • Works both ways (not a diode) • Different types: Carbon film, ceramic, etc… • We have 2 types with different resistance Resistors
Uses electromagnetism and ferromagnetism • Components: Protective steel hull (some), Protective foam (some), +current, GND current, gear input (some), electromagnets (number varies), output shaft Motors
Works by electromagnetism and ferromagnetism (again) • The electromagnet is supplied with current which causes it to be attracted to the permanent magnet or repelled by it which vibrates the air • Frequency of current flowing = Frequency of sound (Hz) • Higher frequency = higher pitch • More current = higher decibels (Db) Speakers (Piezo)
Please move forward while we carry on with our demonstration on: • “Completing a closed circuit” • “Utilizing of the different components” Demonstration
Now, you will be given an hour to carry out your own exploration with the building blocks. • Building blocks are found at the side bench. Try it yourself!
Any questions? Thank you.
