Sustaining the Soil Topic 5
Imagine if all the soil on the planet earth would suddenly disappear! What 3 major problems would occur? • Strong winds would tear plants out of the soil or tip them over • Plants wouldn’t be able to grow • Loss of community in soil
How Does Soil Develop? • Parent Material: • Mineral (non-organic) matter (rock, soil, clay) from which the soil developed.
Climate • Determines what kind of plants will grow and how fast they decompose
Vegetation that grows • Determines amount and type of organic material that is in the soil
Water • Brings new soil and nutrients
Time • All these process take lots of time
Healthy soil contains many amazing creatures. They include: • Gophers, earthworms, insects, microscopic bacteria and fungi
Decomposers • Decomposers are organisms that break down plant and animal tissue, forming humus
The four key decomposers are: • Bacteria • Fungi-mould & mushrooms • Microscopic actinomycetes • Earthworms
All you can eat pg 155 • All plants require large amounts of nutrients. The six major nutrients that plants need are nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, calcium, magnesium.
What nutrients usually need to be added to soil? • Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium
Salinization • When salt has collected on the surface of the soil
What two factors contribute to salinization? • Too little vegetation and too much water
How can the problem of salinization be solved? • By replanting the areas so the plants use up the water before it seeps away
Why is soil erosion a serious problem? • 15-30% of organic matter has been lost in just a few decades
What 4 things can farmers do to help preserve their soil? P 158-159 • Planting a cover of vegetation, use seed drills, plant shelter belts modify waterways, use crop rotation.
Hydroponics is the technique for growing plants without soil.
What gives the plants their nutrients? • A special fertilizer
What is aquaponics? • Combines raising fish and growing plants in an aquaculture system
