Introduction • We published a brochure “The story behind Swiss innovation”. • Innovation as the essential factor of economic success in the long run. • Unfortunately, little is known about innovation. • How do ideas develop? • How can they be turned into useful products? • How can they be brought onto the market? • It can quickly fall prey to political opportunism. The question is: What are the most important factors for Switzerland which determinate innovation in the long run?

Pursue a policy of creating freedom of action • A sound innovation policy primarily creates freedom of action. • A sound innovation policy is long term. • A sound innovation policy therefore needs to be “blind”. • The Slovak Republic did a fantastic job in the last years. It has by far higher growth rates than Switzerland. Both countries have similarities. Both countries can learn from each other.
