Revolutionize Your School Library Media Program • Don’t just talk about Best Practices • Accomplish Best Practices • Be indispensable • Solve administration’s challenges • Solve teacher’s challenges • Improve student learning • Provide clear goals for improvement
Create a process for data sharing • Tri-fold brochure developed in Broward County shared with FASM group (Cohesive statewide school library community) • Pull district wide data twice a year & disaggregate by school and level • Publicly publish data • Share w/ media specialists, aides, and principals • Brochures posted on district website • Library Media Specialist share with SAC
Data as conversation starters • Data not meant to be punitive • Data identifies program weaknesses • Data builds professional learning communities to come to shared solutions for common or unique problems • Data changes policies and procedures at the district and school level
Anecdotal Impacts • Engaged school administrators • Schools, principals, & media specialists develop healthy competition • More effective school library media specialists appraisals • 6 of 28 media specialist were chosen as school level Teachers of the Year the 2nd year of data collection • 7 have become school level leaders by passing NBCT • Media specialist PLC group develops solutions to challenges
SLMS change their way of work • The media center becomes a solution for the principal’s biggest issues - school grade, lowest quartile of struggling readers, leadership for reading improvement • School Librarians Reading Endorsement • School Librarians are part of the school level reading leadership team • Develop new strategies to pursue & target Level 1 & 2 students • Collaborations w/ teachers for classroom library statistics

Making the Grade Brochure • Note page numbers from Florida Study - All media specialists and principals are given copies of the study to refer to. • Gives administrators validity to data • All circulation statistics based on school FTE and district averages by level (ES, MS, HS)

Staffing - School & District Impacts • District continues to fund schools for full time media specialists & aides • Media Specialists recognized for improvement • Staffing equity for all schools • Accountability for professional development participation
Budget - School & District Impacts • Principals Accountable for leaving money in library budget • School level multi year budget plans now can focus on print & online resources & technology hardware needs • Equity of funding - no more extremes in budgets across the district
Computers - School & District ImpactsVideo Clip - Leslie Bendt PMHS • Reluctant media specialists increased hardware & personal technology training • Principals used capital & technology funds to increase equipment in media centers • Print funds were not disturbed
Personalized Service - School & DistrictVideo Clip-Lynn Johnson PBMS • All FCAT levels tracked (low and high scoring students) • No Activity Reports run frequently • District averages assist schools with setting realistic goals based on level • Building close relationships with students previously not interested in the library
