  1. Sun • Why is the sun so important? • Write a paragraph.

  2. Sun • The sun keeps us warm. • The sun is the source for essentially all biological energy. • What is biology? • The study of living things • Therefore the sun is the source of energy for all living things.

  3. Sun • Wait, it’s not where I get my energy. • Where do you get your energy? • Write a short paragraph describing where you obtain your energy.

  4. Sun

  5. Sun

  6. Sun • One exception to biological energy • Deep sea hydrothermal vents.

  7. Hydrothermal vents • Archaea and chemosynthesis

  8. Energy Sources • The Sun is also the source of almost all of our other energy needs. • Solar • Coal, Gas, Natural Gas • Wind Power • Hydro Power • Geothermal Power • Nuclear Power

  9. Solar • Solar Energy • Converting electromagnetic energy into electrical energy. • Benefits? • Problems?

  10. Fossil Fuels • Coal • Gas • Natural Gas • Buried plants and animals are compressed for thousands of years and become coal, gas, natural gas. • Benefits? • Problems?

  11. Wind • How is the sun responsible for wind energy? • Heat from the sun is what drives weather patterns creating wind. • Benefits? • Problems?

  12. Hydroelectric • How is the sun responsible for hydroelectric energy? • How did the water get to the top of the mountain?

  13. Hydroelectric continued • Evaporation from the suns energy is what transports water to the top of the mountain. • Benefits? • Problems?

  14. Nuclear • Exceptions • Nuclear energy • Not a clear link between nuclear energy and the sun. • However the source of the sun’s energy is nuclear. • Benefits? • Problems?

  15. Geothermal • Exceptions • Geothermal energy • Drill deep into the earth to use the earths heat to generate electricity. • Benefits? • Problems?

  16. Sun overview • The sun is the source of almost all biological energy. (photosynthesis). • Plants need the sun to drive photosynthesis to produce oxygen. • It is also the source of almost all of our other energy needs. • It keeps us warm • Without the sun everything and everyone would die.
