Some Examples of Beach Erosion People have been trying to control its position with jetties ever since. What happens when the sand cannot shift position naturally? Inlet at Ocean City, Maryland This inlet formed during a storm in 1933.
Inlet – Wrightsville Beach, N.C. Year to year, this inlet at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina (a barrier island) shifts position as longshore current moves sand from one side of the inlet to the other (see the next slide).
This dynamic environment places this resort hotel in danger. Notice the difference in position of the inlet from 1994 to 1998. (That’s only four years!)
Some Examples Close to Home Newly formed inlet at Chatham, Massachusetts (that’s on Cape Cod) The harbor of Chatham is now exposed to the open sea.
Some Examples Close to Home This is in Harwich, Mass. (also on Cape Cod). Given what you know about beach processes, weathering and erosion, longshore current, and human attempts to control erosion, can you describe what is happening here?
