1. 8 Weeks Left How to approach modern US History?

2. We are going to have 4 main THEMES • Civil Rights • Politics and Government • Cold War and Foreign Policy • Economic / Social / Cultural

3. Civil Rights • Our goal for this Theme will be: • By the end of the year students will be able to identify how different groups struggled and campaigned for civil rights and assess their successes.

4. Politics and Government • Our goal for this Theme will be: • By the end of the year students will chart the philosophies of the major political parties in the United States according to Hamiltonian and Jeffersonian philosophy.

5. Cold War and Foreign Policy • Our goal for this Theme will be: • By the end of the year students will assess the intentions of US policies and their roles in global affairs during and after the Cold War.

6. Economic/Social/Cultural • Our goal for this Theme will be: • By the end of the year students will compare and contrast the elements of American society which united the people and elements which divided the people.

7. Long term assignments • Civil Rights – Students will be keeping track of constitutional rights that were being demanded and how the different groups fought for them. • Politics and Government – Students will create a poster chart of the extent to which political eras / administrations were Hamiltonian or Jeffersonian.

8. Long term assignments • Cold War and Foreign Policy – Students will track cold war and post-cold war “Hot Spots” which attracted US attention. • Economic/Social/Cultural – Students will create a poster made to look like a television screen with images of significant moments whish united and/or divided the American people.

9. Questions to Consider • What were the impressions of the USSR? • How does this fit into the context of a future relationship with the USSR? • What was Kennan's opinion of future of US policy? • Highlight/underline policy vocabulary you know…circle vocabulary you need to learn.
