A DISTINCT PEOPLE – DON’T LOSE YOUR WAY (2) Matt. 16:16-18
Criticism About “The Church of Christ” There have always been critics – of Jesus any anything He taught. They still exist – our job is to “be set for the defense of the gospel” (Phil. 1:14-17). These points come from a criticism written in 1829 – when folks still believed in their beliefs.
“They Believe that Baptism… Should be administered on profession of belief that Jesus is the Christ, without examination of experience or consent of the church. This statement deals with several denominational errors. Infant baptism (christening). A misunderstanding of some verses – Psalm 58:3-4 Hyperbole is used frequently in the Bible – Matt. 23:24Deut. 1:28, etc.
Children are “safe”, as opposed to saved or lost. Deut. 1:39; Matt. 18:1-6 At what age can one “believe that Jesus is the Christ”? One must be sufficiently mature to understand a long term commitment. Don’t “say no” to a child. Explain to them the love of God. Denny
Mistake # 2 “Examination of my experience.” Some denominations want your “vision” of salvation. How did God “call” you? Totally w/o Biblical recognition. Paul’s “vision” of Jesus didn’t make him a Christian. “Consent of the church.” Some denominations “vote” on accepting a new convert.” Again, totally w/o Biblical precept.
“They believe… That baptism procures the remission of sins and the gift of the Spirit. It is thus man’s obedience which alone can bring him within the purview of God’s ‘electing’ grace. Isn’t that what the Bible teaches? Acts 2:38 But, it isn’t baptism “alone”. We believe in the sacrifice of Jesus (blood), God’s grace and mercy, faith, repentance, confession and the growth of the new person. We emphasize baptism because most leave it out.
Acts 22:16; Gal. 3:26-27; I Peter 3:21 I Cor. 12:13; Rom. 6:1ff What do these teach? Why omit them? Mark 16:15-16 Have you obeyed so that God can save you? Titus 3:1-5
