What is a “Me in 30 second statement?” • It is a simple way to present to someone else a balanced understanding of who you are. It piques the interest of a listener who invites you to “Tell me a little about yourself,” and it provides a brief and compelling answer to the question. “Why should I hire you?” ERS: Employment Services
Piques: • to excite (interest, curiosity, etc.): Her curiosity was piqued by the gossip. • to arouse an emotion or provoke to action: to pique someone to answer a challenge.
What should this statement include? • Hello, a brief personal introduction, First and Last name, (no nick names) with firm handshake with a smile. • What position you are applying for. *Or if this is used in real life for an interview for a scholarship or special program you would insert your future school or career goals. • A few special character traits or adaptive skills that set you apart from other applicants.
Examples of “Character Traits” • ambitious excited sharp • attentive gentle talented • giving honest thoughtful • bright imaginative trustworthy • considerate independent • cooperative intelligent • decisive mature • dependable pleasant • polite positive • depressed proper • determined responsible
Other important points to consider: • Keep your “Me in 30 second statement” brief. People only listen for 30-60 seconds. This will indicate you are clearly focused and waste no time getting to the point. • Speak in present tense • Remember your audience. Make sure your words, body language, dress and mannerisms are geared toward the interviewers age and status.
