PROJECT LEADER – SNOW GROOMING VEHICLES: Under the supervision of the Project Manager – Snow Grooming Vehicles, your principal challenge will be to improve the performance and the reliability of our industrial vehicles with caterpillars used for snow grooming. Within the framework of this function, your will be responsible for: supervising a team of engineers, design technicians, draftsmen and mechanics in the realisation of the development projects of snow grooming vehicles; influencing the technical orientation of the various projects, increasing the degree of innovation by identifying the differentiation opportunities and supporting the creative contribution of the development team; ensuring the quality and the performance of the products by the supervision of tests on the ground, the analysis of the reports/ratios of performance and the resolution of the identified problems. To qualify for this function, you must be bilingual, hold a university training in mechanical engineering and have an experiment of at least three years in an industry comparable with ours. You can show leadership and you are an enthusiast of the team work. As many of you may have noticed, this year’s program focused particularly on the local aerospace community. From the visit of SAE International President, Rodica Baranescu, to technical presentations by Bombardier and plant tours such as CAE, we are continuously attempting to cater to one of Montreal’s largest and most important industries, and at the same time bring added value to our membership. This being the final newsletter of the season, I would like to take the opportunity to thank this year’s governing board members for their support and effort. Recent section awards such as a Gold Website Award and a Silver Section Award of Excellence are a tribute to their dedication. Although many of our board members will be returning next season, we are continuously looking for volunteers, including company reps. We also must fill our Student Affairs position. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in participating. - S.A. OUTSTANDING YOUNGER MEMBER AWARD We ’ve recently had the pleasure of honouring our Secretary and Newsletter Editor, Milry Milius, with the Outstanding Younger Member Award. Apart from doing an excellent job as our Secretary and Newsletter Editor, he has taken on several other roles on our board and has quickly emerged as the next leader of our section. Of note, he has developed our electronic newsletter and assisted with the creation of our new website. Milry is also responsible for most of the graphic design which shows up on our mailings, website and computer presentations. Here is a description of this award taken from the SAE website: « This award recognizes those younger members who have done an outstanding job in furthering the sections' contributions to the automotive arts and sciences. Such recognition encourages the Society's veteran members to become more involved on both the section and national levels. It also encourages a competitive spirit among the sections' senior members to strive for the award. This award, established in 1976, is administered by the Sections Board Sections Evaluation & Awards Committee. It consists of a laminated certificate and is presented at the recipients's last section meeting of the year ». - S.A. 2001 MOTORSPORT ENGINEERING BANQUET For the first time in six years, SAE Montreal did not host a Motorsport Engineering Banquet during the week of the Grand Prix du Canada. Regrettably, we had to cancel our annual banquet which had been scheduled for Thursday, June 7. As you may be aware, this event has become a tradition in our section, and over the years has grown in both size and popularity. Once again this year, there was much anticipation from many of our members (and non-members), especially after the announcement in our April newsletter. Unfortunately, the speakers that were confirmed for this event informed us that they would not be unable to participate as planned. As this decision was made at a very late stage, we were unable to find alternate speakers in time for the banquet. I apologize to all those who were looking forward to attending, and we hope to make up for it next year. - S.A. CANADAIR / BOMBARDIER CHALLENGER 600: THE FIRST 5 YEARS Last April at École de technologie supérieure, Harry Halton, former Executive Vice-President of Canadair, reminisced about the Challenger 600 business jet, from development through its commercial launch. Jointly organized with CASI, the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute, the presentation brought together a group of about twenty people gathered to learn the untold facts and anecdotes of this historical Canadian aerospace development program. Launched in 1976, the first flight of the program took place a short two years later. The aircraft, still a cornerstone of Bombardier's business jet fleet, comfortably carries its passengers at speeds of Mach 0.8 and at altitudes of up to 41 000 feet. Amongst other things, we learned that a remarkable marketing approach was the main reason that the program was approved by Canadair management. - M.M. www.saesections.org/montreal/
