  2. Building a colony Moses Austin was about to build a colony in Texas . Suddenly, he was sick. Before he died, he asked his wife to tell their son, Stephen F. Austin, to continue Moses Austin’s colony. At this time, Texas was part of Mexico, which was part of Spain. After receiving permission from the Spanish Government to continue his father’s colony, Stephen F. Austin went to Louisiana to get some materials. During this time, Mexico was winning independence from Spain. A few months later, Austin came back. Austin knew the new Mexican Government would not let him build a colony. Austin went to Mexico City to become bilingual . He then asked the Mexico Government to honor his grant. Austin finally brought the first 300 American families, known as the Old 300.
