Psalm 77:15-20* (p. 101) 20 Your people, like a flock of sheep, you guided every day; By Moses’ and by Aaron’s hand you led them on the way.
Scripture Reading – Luke 6:43-49 (p. 1035) • 43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. • 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.
Scripture Reading – Luke 6:43-49 (p. 1035) • 45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. • 46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? • 47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.
Scripture Reading – Luke 6:43-49 (p. 1035) • 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. • 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."
Psalm 69:14-18 (p. 306) 14 Deliver me out of the mire, from sinking do me keep; Free me from those that do me hate, and from the waters deep.
Psalm 69:14-18 (2/4) 15 Let not the flood on me prevail, whose water overflows; Nor deep me swallow, nor the pit her mouth upon me close.
Psalm 69:14-18 (3/4) 16 Hear me, O LORD, because thy love and kindness is most good; Turn unto me, according to thy mercies’ multitude.
Psalm 69:14-18 (4/4) 17 Nor from thy servant hide thy face: I’m troubled, soon attend. 18 Draw near my soul, and it redeem; me from my foes defend.
Sermon - Luke 6:46-49An Unshakable Christian Life • V. 46 – “Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?” • Our passage today is about SURVIVAL! • Testing times - like floods – reveal who we really are. ‘Evan Almighty’ (Film 2007)
1 – Jesus Wants Real Followers • About 1/3 of the human race claim to be Christian. • But does 1/3 of the human race look like Jesus? • V. 46 – “Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?” • “Lord, Lord” – sounds real and emphatic, but it is hollow.
2 – Real FollowersSurvive the Storm • Often the Bible echoes the account of Noah. • What do our storms reveal about our spiritual foundations? • The wise and foolish builder – they are NOT TWO TYPES of Christian. • Is Jesus your Lord?
3 – There are Real Struggles in the Storms • FEAR? Are we afraid of Jesus’ words? Avoiding vulnerability? • CARELESS? Do we neglect obedience? To busy to become ‘fluent’? • UNREALITY? All talk, spiritual snobs; discussion, and opinion, without real deep change?
The DNA of GRACE: Obedience • C S LEWIS: “When I was a child I often had toothache, and I knew that if I went to my mother she would give me something which would deaden the pain for that night and let me get to sleep. But I did not go to my mother – at least, not till the pain became very bad. And the reason I did not go was this. I did not doubt she would give me the aspirin; but I knew she would also do something else…
The DNA of GRACE: Obedience • …I knew she would take me to the dentist next morning. I could not get what I wanted out of her without getting something more, which I did not want. I wanted immediate relief from pain; but I could not get it without having my teeth set permanently right. And I knew those dentists: I knew they started fiddling about with all sorts of other teeth which had not yet begun to ache. (Mere Christianity).
Firm Foundations…? • Does Jesus just happen to fit into your life, tolerated because he makes little real difference? Is he your LORD? • Never say “Lord, Lord” -unless you mean it!
Psalm 31:1-6*(p. 36 - LM) 1 In you I’ve taken refuge, LORD; You are my shelter in distress. O let me never be ashamed, But save me in your righteousness.
Psalm 31:1-6*(2/4) 2 Lord, turn your ear to hear my cry; Come quickly to deliver me, And be my rock and firm defence, My stronghold and security.
Psalm 31:1-6*(3/4) 3 You are my fortress and my rock; For your name’s sake be my sure guide. 4 Preserve me from the trap that’s set; You are the refuge where I hide.
Psalm 31:1-6*(4/4) 5 Redeem me, LORD, O God of truth; My spirit I commit to you. 6 I hate all those who trust false gods; I trust the LORD, for he is true.
