  1. 7.1 Goal: Find ratios and unit rates.Essential Question:What are three ways you can write the ratio of two numbers X and Y?

  2. Definitions • A ratio uses division to compare two numbers. You can write the ratio of a to b (b≠ 0) in three ways: aa : ba to b b Ratios that have the same value are called equivalent ratios.

  3. Example 1 At Park Apartments, there are 3 maintenance workers for 150 apartments. Write the ratio maintenance workers : apartments in three ways.

  4. Definition • A rate is a ratio of two quantities that have different units. Two rates are equivalent if they have the same value.

  5. Example 2 Li types 75 words per minute. How many words can she type in an hour at this rate?

  6. Definition A unit rate is a rate that has a denominator of 1 unit. To write a unit rate, find an equivalent rate with a denominator of 1 unit.

  7. Example 3 Write 24 pages in 15 minutes as a unit rate.

  8. Daily Puzzler Jessie runs 6 laps in 10 minutes; Zhenia runs 6 laps in 12 minutes. What is the ratio of Jessie’s running speed to Zhenia’s speed?
