Definition of Archaeology The definition of archaeology is: The study of Human History and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains. Archaeology
My Understanding of Archaeologists My understanding of Archaeologists is that their job is to spend their day trying to dig artifacts up from rough terrain, a normal hill, asphalt, in front of opera houses, soil, sand underwater, mountains, caves and a lot more. They do this by using some special digging tools like a hammer, shovel, hands, spade and a lot more.
How to date artifacts Dating objects is called archaeometry. In some occasions it is easy to date an object because it has the date already on it. For example a coin. If an archaeologist finds a coin in a sand dune and it says it’s from great Britain then it will probably say a date on it like 1899 or something. Sadly most of the time it’s harder to date objects.
Radiocarbon dating Scientist use all types of dating to figure out how old an object is. Here is a type of dating they use: Radiocarbon dating- used for ancient and artifacts. Most important, radioactive carbon within the object is measured to determine the age of this object. Every living thing absorbs carbon from the atmosphere. the tiniest amount of it is radioactive. When it dies the radioactivity dies out.
Absolute dating Absolute dating is when archaeologists decide how old an object is. Finding the date of a coin isn’t so hard because usually it says the year when it was produced. 5 CHF 1856
Cultural dating Cultural dating is when scientists find objects And compare their age with objects they already have. Example if they have vase from Pompeii and found another vase that might have been found in a city close to Pompeii. they could probably find something They have in common.
Relative dating Relative dating is when archaeologists find an object but cannot tell the exact date or year when the artifact was made but can only tell if it’s newer than another object or older than another object. For example pottery is an object that is really hard to date because it is hand made. But they could probably determine about the age because there must have been some sort of “style” that could tell the ages of pottery apart. Or some sort of different clay.
Scientific dating Some ancient objects are easier to date in a lab. Scientific dating was first used in the late 1700’s. the oldest form was called dendrochronology or tree ring counting.
