  4. What caused it? • Surface Fault • The Philippine and the Eurasian plate collide causing the earthquake

  5. These plates collide to form the earthquake

Casualties/Destruction • Two thousand four hundred people died • Ten thousand seven hundred people were injured • More than eight thousand five hundred buildings were destroyed • Six thousand two hundred were seriously damaged • More than five thousand people were rescued from rubble • Buildings pan caked, trapping people

  8. Money • Economic losses were from ten to twelve billion United States dollars

  9. Other Hazard? • Liquefaction: affected mainly areas close to riverbanks and levees, the most severe affected one was a twenty year old port in Taichung • Landslides: More than one thousand eight hundred, through the central mountain region • The landslides prose the most damage

  11. How did Scientists measure the amount of damage • Richter Scale • Measures the energy of the waves • From one through 10 • From not so dangerous to extremely dangerous

  12. How to prevent • Better planning • Better construction • Mitigation practices before earthquake occurs • Providing critical and timely information to improve response after they occur
