Status of work and plans of the Russian groupin the ALICE Collaborationas of October, 2009
(From April JWG) • Improvement, installation PHOS completed • Test, commissioning & cosmic runs PHOS, TOF, T0, DIMUON, ITS ongoing • Further development of soft-ware for data analysis PHOS, T0 ongoing • Further development of the soft-ware for DCS PHOS, T0 ongoing • Further development of the physics program • ongoing • First physics run • Analysis of the first physics data Activities in 2009
Photon spectrometer (PHOS) KI, Sarov, IHEP, JINR, Bergen, Oslo, Hiroshima, Wuhan, Warsaw, Prague Conclusion of 2007 long test: Water condensation when cooled casing needed improvement • February – July, 2009 3 new air – tight casings produced and tested (design and production started in 2008) • March – August, 2009 3 PHOS modules assembled in the new casings and tested in the lab • July 2, 2009 one PHOS module installed • August 13 – 14, 2009 two more PHOS modules installed Current PHOS status • Commissioning of the PHOS is ongoing • Slow cooldown started in end September • currently at about 0oC ( final operation temperature 25oC) • humidity is stable and far below dew point
Photon Spectrometer (PHOS) 3 2 1 PHOS installation (August 14) Airtight casing
PHOS in beam injection run • PHOS takes part on the global ALICE commissioning with cosmic and beam injection runs. • 25-27.09.2009: the proton beam injection • Several events with high multiplicity were observed (more than 100 cells/module) . • Deposited energy per crystal is low (few tens of MeV). Examples of beam injection events:
PHOS in cosmic run Examples of cosmic events in PHOS: Spectrum of cell energies in cosmic run HLT event display shows a large shower with some its fraction in PHOS. Analysis is in progress.
PHOS modules in the ALICE detector ALICE Status The ALICE/PHOS Collaboration and the ALICE management are investigating possible ways to fund construction in 2011 the fourth PHOS module, so that it could be installed in the end 2011. PHOS
Trigger detector T0 MEPhI, INR, KI, Jyvaskyla • May, 2009 Re-cabling of the T0-A detector (in October, 2008, all cables were removed because of the miniframe modification) , T0 detector commissioned. • July, 2009 T0&TRD test. • Verification of proper operation of the interface between the T0 detector and the pre-trigger system for TRD • The new type of the amplifier approved and installed • July 11 – 12, 2009 Participation in the injection test • Sensitivity of the T0 detector to the injection particles was demonstrated • The T0 detector operated as a trigger • The calibration with the laser was confirmed to be correct, though, as expected, the amplitude resolution with the injection particles was slightly worse as compared to that with the laser.
T0 - data • Laser Data • 1-3 mip • 1-3 mip • 1-3 mip • 1-3 mip • Beam Data
Dimuon spectrometer PNPI • Commissioning of the muon tracking chambers • Many sources of electronics noise identified and fixed • Fixing of poor connections and gas leak is underway • Cosmic run • Stable and efficient data taking More than 400000 events are recorded in various configurations of the magnetic fields Commissioning of the muon tracking chambers An example of event triggered with MTR
Detector TOF ITEP • Cosmic run • TOF – one of the main trigger detectors for cosmic run. • Very stable trigger rate (back-to-back quasi vertical tracks) • Preliminary time resolution 200 psec for “self-triggering” mode
Physics RRC “KI”, JINR, IHEP, ITEP, INR, StPGU, PNPI, MEPhI, Sarov Development of soft-wares for data analysis, MC study of feasibility of measurements of various signals with the ALICE detector. • Physics of direct photons, neutral mesons, and jets with the PHOS spectrometer. RRC “Kurchatov Institute”, IHEP, JINR, Sarov • Feasibility of measurement of short-lived resonances. PNPI , ITEP, JINR • Study of long range correlations for pp and AA collisions in the framework of String Fusion Model.
