  7. Characteristics • Classic is used to describe something with broad and long-lasting appeal • There was a renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman civilization and culture • Thought was based in science and not religion • Music focused on balance, clarity, structure and simplicity

  8. Characteristics Continued • Focus shifted from steady bass to singable melodies • Music was still commissioned, mainly for solo piano or string quartet • The piano quickly gained popularity due to versatility
