Memoirs • an autobiographical sketch--especially one that focuses on the author's personal life or psychological development • For our purposes

Famous Examples….Have your read any of these? • -Night by Elie Wiesel • -”I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou • - Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt
Why not read one from one of the greatest poetic minds of the 20th century • -Lets read “Graduation” by Maya Angelou. • -Jot down all the RAFT information available to you after you read the introduction • -As you read, annotate (look for the characteristics of a memoir we mentioned earlier) AND (ethos, pathos, logos).
6 word memoirs • -6 word memoirs are memoirs (DUR) that are only 6 words long…no more, no less • -Before you say “oh that’s easy!”, keep in mind that you have to sum up your entire life in 6 words!!!! • -These are very difficult but are extremely useful when creating your own, longer memoir.

Lets try some!!! • -As we cycle through the pictures, write your 6 word memoirs of these people
Your Turn • -Write a 6 word memoir of YOURSELF • -When you have finished your first draft, hook up with a partner and share. • -in your partnerships, ask the writer some probing questions like: does this encompass your essence? Is this all you have to say? Etc. • -HOMEWORK: 1) Post your 6 word memoir to the class wiki wallwisher • 2) Post your 6 word memoir to the Smith website for possible publication!
