How to Guide to the Science Fair 7th and 8th Grade Science
Come up with a testable question. Which container will keep my beverage colder the longest? Styrofoam or an insulated cup?
Learn as much about your topic as you can. This is called background research. Fill out your work cited worksheet as you go. Mrs. Payne can help you come up with some questions. What is the optimal temperature of drinking water? What is the specific heat capacity of water? What are the insulating properties of the two materials?
What are your variables for you experiment. You will need an independent, dependent and controlled variables. Independent is what you change, dependent is what your outcome will be, control is all the things you try to keep the same. Independent – styrofoam Dependent – the temperature of the water Controls – Everything you tried to keep the same.
Create a hypothesis. Must be an if, then statement. If I place cold water in a Styrofoam cup and a insulated cup, then I expect that the insulated cup will do a better job of keeping the water cooler.
Make a very detailed material list for your experiment. 1.insulated cup 2. styrofoam cup 3. thermometer 4. graduated cylinder Etc…
List steps you will use to test your hypothesis. This is called your experimental procedure. 1. Gather all materials for experiment, see material list. 2. Take the temperature of your water sample and record it in your composition notebook. 3. Place the exact same amount of water in both cups. Collect temperature. Etc…
7. Perform your experiment and collect lots and lots of data in your composition notebook. Temperature of water when placed in the cups-32 degrees. An then record temperature every 2 minutes.
Make a graph of your data. When graphing your data place the independent variables at the top of your excel worksheet.
Make an conclusion statement. My hypothesis was correct, the insulated cup kept the water cooler for a longer period of time.
Organize and write about your background research. Depending on your topic this could be short of very long. Mrs. Fees will help you with this.
Write an abstract. An abstract is a short description of your experiment. Mrs. Fees will help you with this also.
Compile all your information about your project in a paper. Don’t worry this is the easy part. See Mrs. Payne for the proper formatting of this paper.
Create a display board to show the important aspects of your experiment. Make sure that you place at least one graph on your board. Make sure that your variables are listed.
