  1. Panel Discussion『Service Migration in Ipv4/IPv6 Co-exsiting environment What we should do?』 Ryoko ‘maro’ NAKANISHI Translated by Akira Kato 1

  2. In a morning, there was an Oracle: Are you ready for IPv6 service? 2

  3. Introduction • Only a few years to IPv4 address depletion • Situation is getting serious • It is a matter of time that Ipv4 address depletion happens. 3

  4. Is the problem only addr depletion? • Such problem has not been shared with anybody other than L3 people • Too late to start something when IPv4 address space is once depleted • Only a few providers provide IPv6 service • Especially datacenter operators • Operational experience on IPv4/v6 co-exisitng environment? • Not only dual-stack is a solution 4

  6. (1) First bake-off (2) Second bake-off A scroll of Adventure 6

  7. First Bake-off • Dwarves try it first • Does currently established technology make IPv6 to follow IPv4's footsteps? • What is the key of network confiugration? • Does it work at all? • Any problem in service migration? • Is the migration an easy task? 7

  8. Design -1st stage- IPv6 test environment ADSL modem Existing BB Router Additional BB Router IPv4 test environment 8

  9. Second Bake-off • The dwarves tries again • How IPv4/v6 translation works? • Is it possible to monitor IPv4/v6 ? • Make the toplogy more realistic • Communication test from an IPv6 only client to an IPv4 server • How problems detected in IPv6 environment? 9

  10. Design -2nd stage- 10

  11. The dwarves got Level up ! 11

  12. The results... • The second bake-off didn't completed smoothly • Number of dungeons (like blackhomes) around the clients • Many bugs in server-side • Monsters generated when dual stack enabled • A cursed spells called “Specification” 12

  13. (1) A sage says 「What problems are there around the client?」 (2) Amage said 「What is server dual stacked?」 (3) A warrior says 「Create the network environment in such a way!」 A scroll of knowledges 13

  14. Introduction of Dwarves(Panelists) • A sage to govern clients • Yoshiaki Kitakughi (Intec Netcore) • A maze around the servers • Shin Shirahata (Clara Online) • A warrior in the networks • Shingo Kudo (IPv6 Promotion Counsil IPv4/IPv6 Co-exsiting WG Service migration Sub-WG co-chair) 14

  15. 15

  16. Summary • What obtained through expeirments • Need to deliver the warning to all those woking in the network • Other thoughts • Decision by the providers could minimize the damage in the IPv4 address depletion issue. • Everybody needs to realise the resposibility as a network operator not to impede the network development 16

  17. When you make a decision • Use it • Get used to it • Bring it up • Train it • Raise the level • Look for customers who pay for it • Create services the customers pay for 17

  18. WE CAN DO ! WE CAN DO !! 18

  19. It is a nice moment to start the IPv6 services 19

  20. THANK YOU! - 20 -
