  1. p0-Charged Hadron Azimuthal Correlations Nathan Grau Iowa State University For the PHENIX Collaboration

  2. Outline • Motivations for two particle correlation functions: azimuthal anisotropy (elliptic flow) • Analysis from the PHENIX experiment from Au-Au at = 200 GeV • Use PHENIX capability to measure high-pT p0 and extract the v2 flow parameter

  3. Reaction plane Motivation - Azimuthal Anisotropy / Elliptic Flow Pressure gradient • Non-central collisions pressure gradient • Particles correlated with reaction plane Molnar & Voloshin, nucl-th/0302014 v2 = <cos(2f)> • Quark Coalescence – large saturated v2 • meson & baryon flow differs

  4. Correlation Functions and v2 Extraction • Numerator: pairs within event. • Denominator: pairs within different events. • Detector efficiencies and acceptance cancels. The Correlation Function for two-particle correlations is given as: • Need h+/- - h+/- Correlation Function in a reference pT bin

  5. PHENIX Experiment • Drift Chamber (DC) and Pad Chamber 1 (PC1) for tracking • RICH rejects e+,e- • EMCal (PbSc, PbGl) for high-pT g's reconstruct p0’s

  6. Extracting v2 • Candidate p0 – all g pairs under peak • Background = Combinatoric g pairs in mass • Bin mass towards background v2 estimate Mgg

  7. Correcting the p0 v2 To measure p0 v2: • v2meausred extracted in mass • Measure v2 outside p0 mass bins. • v2B obtained from a linear fit with the v2 outside p0 mass bins.

  8. Corrected p0 v2 Work in Progress • v2 rises to and saturates at 0.15 for pT > 3 GeV • Large error bars due to extrapolation of the v2B as well as the B/S. Min Bias

  9. Summary • Presented work in progress on p0-h+/- correlations from = 200 GeV Au-Au at the PHENIX experiment. • Presented initial correction to the p0 v2. • Future work: Good PID for high-pTp0, have v2 for p-p, d-Au, and next Au-Au run.

  10. Extracting v2B Point extracted from linear fit to the data points outside p0 mass. Error bars calculated by the extreme v2Bvalues of the data points. V2B V2B 1.5<pT<2.0 GeV 2.0<pT<2.5 GeV Mgg Mgg
