  1. Planning for the future KeyStage 1 KeyStage 2 The population of our country grows and changes over the years. How does our government know the facts and numbers to help them plan for the future? The government uses information from the census to plan for things such as schools, hospitals and housing.

  4. Planning for the future Our task: We’re going to create lovely artworks of our own brand new town.

  5. Planning for the future KeyStage 1 (Key Stage 1) Our next task: Planning our class trip One group will go to the theatre. One group will go to a museum. One group will go to a theme park.

  6. Planning for the future How will we gather this information? How will this information help us plan? How many children are going to each trip. How many tickets to buy for the museum/theatre/theme park. How many lunches to prepare. Arranging our transport.

  7. Planning for the future KeyStage 2 (Key Stage 2) Our next task: It is 10 years after our townwas built. We want to find out what to plan for our town’s future. So we’re going to hold a census! We need to think about: What questions will we ask? What data do we want to gather? How will we use this to help planning?

  8. Planning for the future Our questions, and why we need the information which the answers will give us: How many people live in the town? We need this information to plan services, such as hospitals, schools, etc. How many people live in each flat/house? We need this information to help plan the town’sfuture housing. Why do we need to know people’s ages? We need this information to plan for schools, healthand future housing needs. Why do we need to know how people travelto school and work? We need this information to help with transport planning.

  11. Planning for the future This bar chart shows us the population of children aged up to 7 in our town at the beginning and ten years later. We found this information out after carrying out a census.

  12. Planning for the future The school in our local town is a two-form entry. This means that there are up to 30 children in each class, and up to 60 children in each year group. The results of our census show us that there are over 270 children aged up to 3 years in the town.

What do you think the school should do for its classes in the near future? Can you think of other changes the local government might need to plan for? What impact will this have on the school?

  15. Planning for the future Our next task: Create a plan for the school in our town over the next two years. Think about: Will the number of classes in someyear groups have increased? Will we need more teachers? Will we need more space?
