October 17, 2013Sculpture • You need: • Booklets • Something to write with • Activity: • Introduction to the next project • Draw out a color wheel if there’s time
The Humungous Harvest Organic Forms in Clay
You will… • Pick the name of a fruit or vegetable out of a box • Your fruit/veg should have signs of human interaction (bite, sliced, partially peeled etc) • You will shape the fruit/veg out of paper, tape, cardboard and foil • Finish surface neatly with ‘papiermache’ • Paint realistically
Why are we doing this? • Another use for paper in art making • Review color wheel and mixing colors • Autumn is the time for harvests/Thanksgiving • Day of the Dead (food offerings to deceased loved ones) • Artists have used food imagery for inspiration for hundreds of years • We all need to eat! • Learn something new about food in our society
Color Wheel • A diagram that organizes the basic colors
Palette • Surface to mix paints on
Colors that mix to create ALL other colors 1.Red 2. Blue 3. Yellow Primary Colors
Colors made with 2 primary colors • Green (blue+yellow) • Orange (yellow+red) • Violet (blue+red) Secondary Colors
Intermediate/Tertiary Colors Colors made from 1 primary and 1 secondary color Yellow-green Yellow-orange Red-violet Red-orange Blue-green Blue-violet
ColorScheme • A planned combination of colors
Complementary Colors • Colors that are opposite to each other.
Earth colors. • Mix complementary colors to get these colors Neutral Colors
Intensity • How bright or dull a color is
Armature: • The support structure (skeleton) of a sculpture. Often is covered up. • For this project, our armature can be made with: • Newspaper • Tape • Cardboard • Foil
a glue mixture that uses newspaper, wheat paste (flour) and water Papier Mache
Pop Art: • Time in art and history (1950’s-60’s) when artists used popular or generic images and icons within art.
Andy Warhol • One of the founders Pop Art • “15 minutes of fame”: idea that anything can be famous for a short time, until the public grows tired of it.
Claus Oldenburg • Used playful objects in a very large scale • Objects developed a ‘personality’ of their own
How we’ll begin • You’ll pick a fruit or vegetable randomly from a box. • You can trade with a friend if you both agree! • Begin building the armature out of newspaper and tape. Cardboard will be available for sharp or flat edges (5 classes) • Simple fruits and vegetables need to look INTERACTED with somehow (sliced, bitten etc) • Complex fruits & vegetables include broccoli, artichokes, asparagus (multiple spears only). • Once it’s built, you will papiermache the form so it’s solid and finished looking (3 classes) • Painting! 90% mixed colors from Primary colors (and black & white) (4 classes)
Now: • We will draw out a color wheel to practice color mixing on tomorrow • Turn in your notes at the end of class to the FRONT BOX
