Showplace Cities • Cities that show of the wealth and power of a country • Originated with ancient rulers who wanted to demonstrate their power and disposable cash • Florence Italy is an example • Modern examples are some national capitals • Washington and Brasilia • Feature beautiful architecture, grand avenues, green spaces and monuments
Crime Free Cities • History • Clearing bushes from the sides of roads • Street lamps • Today • Crime prevention through environmental design • Tumbler Ridge BC example
Garden Cities • Early 1900’s Ebenezer Howard in London England • Garden cities are small cities completely independent of a nearby large city. Located out in the country • Would attract city people, and relieve city congestion. • Residents would live and work in their communities and not commute to the large city • Surrounded by farmland and green space that acts as a greenbelt between the big city and the garden city.
