Describe the relationship between healthy behaviors and personal health. • b. Describe ways to prevent common injuries and health problems. • c. Describe when it is important to seek health care. • HE5.2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors. • a. Examine the influence of family and peers on personal health behaviors and decisions. • c. Describe how the home, school, and community culture can influence personal health.

  3. Rationale • This Alphabet Book is designed to teach you all about Health Education. You will discover interesting facts about Health Education when reading this book. I created this book all by myself, just for you! Please handle it with care! I hope you enjoy it!

  4. A • Asthma: a chronic condition in which the small airways in the lungs become narrow, making it really hard to breathe. People with asthma, sometimes have to use inhalers.

  5. B • Brush: …..your teeth! It is extra important to brush your teeth at least twice a day!

  6. C • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): an emergency procedure consisting of external cardiac massage and artificial respiration. * CPR should be done when someone is not breathing and needs resuscitation.

  7. D • Disease Prevention: activities designed to protect patients or other members of the public from actual or potential health threats and their harmful consequences.

  8. E • Emergency: a situation in which help is needed quickly. • Example: An emergency would be when someone has a car wreck or a house is on fire.

  9. F • First Aid: the quick and temporary care given to a person who has a sudden illness or injury. * First Aid Kits are great to always have handy, in case of an emergency!

  10. G • Germs: disease-causing bacterium. Germs can make people sick. *Wash your hands often to prevent from spreading germs!

  11. H • Hazard: something that can cause harm or injury.

  12. I • Injury: harm done to a person. • minor injury: scrapped knee or small cut • major injury: (may take much longer to heal) broken arm, broken leg

  13. J • Jogging: a form of physical activity that consists of a slow pace run. *Why jogging is important: -Helps maintain healthy weight -Prevents obesity

  14. K • Kick Ball: an awesome form of physical activity, which consists of kicking a ball and running bases. * Prevents: Obesity

  15. L • Life Skills: Life skills will help you achieve wellness. *Some Important Life Skills include: • Practice Healthful Behaviors • Set Health Goals • Make responsible decisions • Resolve conflicts • Manage stress

  16. M • Mental Health: is the condition of your mind. This includes how you express your feelings and manage stress.

  17. N • Nurse: a person that is trained to care for sick people. *Two Types of Nurses: LPN & RN

  18. O • Obesity: having too much body fat. *Ways to prevent obesity: - Exercise - Eat healthy foods

  19. P • Physical Health: is the condition of your body. This includes how your body systems work and how well you care for your body systems.

  20. Q • Quit: to depart from something. You should quit doing anything that is harmful to your body! **Things that cause bodily harm: -Smoking -Drugs -Drinking -Not exercising

  21. R • Risk Factor: anything that increases the chance of harm.

  22. S • Safety Rules: guidelines to help prevent injury. Many safety rules help you avoid hazards.

  23. T • Tetanus: is an infection caused by poisons made by bacteria that enter a puncture wound. ** It is very important to keep your Tetanus vaccine up to date, in order to prevent from getting the Tetanus infection. **

U • Universal Precautions: steps taken to avoid having contact with pathogens in body fluid. * Wear disposable gloves! * Do not wear the same gloves more than once! * Wash your hands with soap and water after you take the gloves off! * Do not eat or drink while giving first aid! * Do not touch your mouth, eyes, or nose while giving first aid!

  25. V • Vaccinations: a vaccine (shot) is given as a precaution against contracting a disease.

  26. W • Wellness: the highest level of health that can be achieved.

  27. X • eXercise: activity requiring physical effort, carried out especially to sustain or improve health and fitness.

  28. Y • Keep yourself YOUNG: to keep yourself young you must take care of your body by eating healthy, exercising, and having yearly check-ups.

  29. Z • “ZZZ’s”: catching “zzz’s”, is also known as sleeping. It is very important to get an adequate amount of sleep every night.
