Martin Luther’s 95 Theses • In 1517, Luther issued his 95 theses, attacking the Church’s practices/beliefs he felt immoral • Examples • Indulgenes- he felt them to be immoral • Salvation- he believed was based on faith ALONE. • He was also against papal infalibility- the idea that the pope is the sole authority on matters of religious doctrine
Luther Continued • Luther’s original goal was to reform the Catholic church, NOT to create a new denomination • In 1520, he burned a papal bull (document from the pope) which condemned his teachings as heretical • He was excommincated within a month. • The Luthern church is based on his ideas
The Reformation • Luther’s ideas single handedly destroyed the unity of Western Europe: • Christianty was now and forever (as of 2009) fragmented • Luther’s ideas benefited the poor,who began to assert themselves more in secular (non church) matters • This led to uprisings and civil wars all across Europe
