NCTM, CCSSM, Assessment and… Discussion and Q & A for TOTOM, 9/9/2011 J. Michael Shaughnessy President, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
NCTM & the CCSSM, a brief history… • (sigh)
NCTM Resources for CCSSM • Making it Happen – NCTM publication linking NCTM Standards documents to the CCSSM-includes support from PSSM, Focal Points, Focus on High School Mathematics: Reasoning and Sense Making as well as other NCTM resources • The Essential Understandings Project • A new Curriculum Progressions Task Force—meets this fall, new move by NCTM
MCCC • The Mathematics Common Core Coalition was established this past summer by NCTM, AMTE, ASSM, NCSM, CCSSO, and the two Assessment Consortia, PARCC & SBAC
Mission of MCCC The Mathematics Common Core Coalition strives to ensure the successful communication, interpretation, implementation, and assessment of the Common Core State Standards.
Threefold Purpose of MCCC • Provide a means to review, research, develop, and communicate common messages throughout the implementation and assessment of CCSSM. • Provide content and assessment expertise and advice from the communities of mathematics education for the development of the content frameworks of the assessment consortia for CCSSM.
Threefold Purpose of MCCC 3) Collect, analyze, and disseminate information about CCSSM implementation and assessment processes to inform future revisions of the CCSSM.
MCCC Website • The Coalition website, www.mathccc.org, will include material and links to information and resources that the organizations of the coalition are providing to the public and the education community about CCSSM.
MCCC Info Release • The Coalition was announced in the Sept 1 NCTM’s President Message in Summing UP, NCTM’s bi-weekly e-newsletter. • Yesterday a press release announcing the coalition was sent out to all major news and wire services. • Next meeting of the Coalition members: October 4th, Reston, VA at NCTM headquarters
PARCC and SBAC Frameworks • PARCC released their initial draft for their content specifications framework draft last month for public review. The period for public comment on it has now passed. Their framework draft files are under revision. • Smarter Balanced released their content specifications are currently available for public comment until Sept 19, and can be found at http://www.k12.wa.us/SMARTER/Resources.aspx
NCTM input into Assessment • Assessment Conference—April 29, 30th Arlington • Recommending Math Educators and Math Assessment Experts to both Consortia • Input on Illustrative Mathematics Project • Board and President reviews of both assessment content specification framework drafts
Everyone! • Take every opportunity possible to give input on those assessment frameworks drafts. • Oregon is an SBAC state, all of us should read that draft, and let the Oregon state department know our feedback, concerns, suggestions. • CCSSM is not just a K – 12 Mathematics Education issue, we all need to think about this and teacher education, too.
