Dental Hygiene • Competitive Admission • Full-time, day enrollment only • Length of time (7 quarters/2 years) • Estimated tuition/fees for 2011-2012 have not been finalized. • New application expected in late July/early August tentatively at the Dental Hygiene website: www.lwtc.edu/dentalhygiene Make sure you stay up to date with the most current version

Admission Schedule August 2011 Application packet available to download on Dental Hygiene website December 2011 Sciences + ENGL&101 must be completed by end of Fall qtr. or Fall sem. to be eligible to apply February 2012 Application due to Enrollment Services March/April 2012 Admissions decisions are made in late April. All other prerequisite courses must be complete by end of Spring quarter to be eligible to start the program if accepted. Fall 2012 Dental Hygiene coursework begins

Projected Changes to the Admissions and Selection Process • Students can now choose to be “in progress” with select prerequisites and still apply to the program (Benefit: Possibly apply much earlier than anticipated) • Work/volunteer experience category has been simplified and hours needed reduced: (Benefit: Possible for students to earn points in this category with more time to focus on classes) • No two stage process and no interview. In lieu of this-------- use of recommendations and required observations of Dental Hygienists. (Benefit: You control the choice of who recommends you; observing ensures that applicants gain first-hand knowledge of the field in multiple clinical settings prior to program entry)

Prerequisites: Required before applying (GPA Bearing Courses) CHEM&121* CHEM&131 BIOL&241 * BIOL&242 BIOL&260 ENGL&101 Please Note: All science courses must have been complete within the last 7 years *For planning purposes: At LWTC students must take MATH 098 (Intermediate Algebra) before CHEM&121; at LWTC students must take BIOL&211 before taking BIOL&241 Each course must be completed with a 2.5 or B- or better to be eligible to apply.

  7. “In Progress” Prerequisites Math Must be MATH&107 or higher. MATH102 from LWTC will no longer meet the requirement PSYC&100 General Psychology Speech CMST&210 or CMST&220 SOC&101 Introduction to Sociology NUTR&101 Nutrition for Healthcare Professionals Note: All science courses must have been completed within the last 7 years -Math course had to have Intermediate Algebra as its prerequisite Each course must be completed with a 2.5 or B- or better to be eligible to start program.

  8. “In Progress” Prerequisites continued… • Students can be taking these courses at the time they are applying to the Dental Hygiene program. Complete course w/ 2.5 or B- or better by end of Spring quarter • If a student has all prerequisites complete at time of application— earn 5 points on application. No partial points

  10. Selection Criteria: Work Experience* • Min. 250 hours of paid chair side dental assisting 5 points OR • Min. 250 hours of any human medical related patient care experience including volunteer 3 points *This application element is not required to be minimally qualified to apply

Selection Criteria: TEAS • The TEAS will have Grammar/language usage, reading comprehension, math, and science sections • TEAS points calculation: Composite percentage divided by 100 and multiplied by 10; English score divided by 100 and multiplied by 10; Reading score divided by 100 and multiplied by 20, combine to give applicant the possible 40 points • Can retake after 30 days. After that—a calendar year

TEAS = Test of Essential Academic SkillsVersion 5 Required Reading – paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions (48items, 58 minutes) Math – whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion, stats (34 items, 51 minutes) Science –science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, basic physical principles, and general science (54 items, 66 minutes) English and Language Usage – punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling (34 items, 34 minutes) GRAND TOTAL=170 questions in 3 hours & 29 min

  13. Recommendations • One from college or university faculty member • One from an employer, co-worker, faculty , advisor or counselor • Forms are provided in packet • Submission of completed forms is still being determined but will be thoroughly outlined in the application once published

  14. Observations • Minimum of combined total of 20 hours. • Observations take place in two separate clinical settings • Observing Dental Hygienists • Forms are provided in the application packet • You provide form to Dental Hygienist. They will give back to you and you will include this sealed observation form with your completed application packet

Selection to Cohort • Once application is submitted-ES is checking completeness of application • Also making a cross check with the grades you self reported in your application with the transcripts you submitted with the application • Points are tallied and the top 30 candidates are offered positions in the upcoming fall start cohort • There is no waitlist for this program

Application Stats from February 2011** 79 Total Applicants Applicants selected for interviews (on average) had: An Associates Degree 3.6 on Science Prerequisites 3.6 on Other Prerequisites 1400 hours chair-side Dental Assisting employment Average TEAS Composite score of 76 Average TEAS Reading score of 78.9 Average TEAS English score of 79.8 **(Using the old points system/2 stage process which is not comparable to selection process outlined in this presentation)

  18. Quarter-by-quarter class plans and other longer advising tasks are completed during Allied Health GPS. How it works: -Individualized advising in a small group setting -Four hour block is set aside -Not more than 8 students will meet one-on- one with an adviser -Use order in which they sign-in upon arrival to the room at the appointed start of the GPS session. *Please note—this is not a drop-in event You will need to bring at least one of the following to the session: *COMPASS scores *Unofficial transcripts *Agency assessed transcripts if international transcript Pre-registration is required: Please call (425)739-8300 to register for GPS If you: -Already have a class plan & want to check in on your progress -Want to register for a class or for next quarter -Have other quick advising needs Go to drop-in advising. 10-15 minute types of questions can be handled in this setting by General Advisors. This is first come, first served. Drop-in Advising Hours Monday-Thursday 8am-3:30pm Fridays 9:30-3:30pm Tuesday-Wednesday 4:30-6:00pm (at the Enrollment Services windows area or in Assessment) Advising Option #2 Advising Option #1
