  1. Topic: FuctionalGrp# 8 :Amines Do Now: Identify the alcohols are primary, secondary or tertiary

  2. Amines • Contain N • General Format: RNH2 • NH2 = amino group • N: bonding capacity of 3 • Can be Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary

  3. Properties of amines • Molecules: H bonded to N = H bonding • weaker than H-bonding in alcohols & carboxylic acids • amines are Bronsted-Lowry bases & can react with acids to form salts • Amines smell really, really bad • A MEAN smell

  4. Examples of amines • PABA • Caffeine • Novacain • B-vitamins • Preparation of dyes

  5. Naming Amines • Find name of base hydrocarbon • Drop final -e & add -amine • # in front of name gives location of amino group

  6. Ethanamine H HHH HCCCNH H HH     1-propanamine   

  7. 2-propanamine NH2 NH2 CH2CH2CH2 1,3-propanediamine

  8. NH2  NH2  CHCH2CH2CH 1,1,4,4-butanetetraamine  NH2  NH2
