BY FAITH OR LAW? Gal. 3:1-14
Mixed Feelings • Could we ever be “good enough”? We must work harder! • Jesus was “openly set forth”. Posted as a public announcement. • Acts 13:23, 27. • Paul makes 4 arguments for faith as opposed to works of the law.
Argument 1 – From Experience • Holy Spirit and miracles – not from law. • Acts 2:38; 5:32 • Miraculous powers to some: Acts 8:14; I Cor. 12:4-11 • Having begun in the Spirit…? • They had suffered for their faith – Acts 13-14. (esp. 14:22
Argument 2 – The Case of Abraham • He began before law or circumcision – Gen. 15:6. • V. 7. Sons of his faith, not of law. • V. 8. This includes the Gentiles, Gen. 12:3; 22:18. • Those of faith blessed w/Abraham.
Argument 3 – The Curse of Law • Law cannot justify – No Law can. • Brings under a curse – Deut. 27:26 • Must “continue in all things”. • We don’t. • V. 11 – justification of by faith. Hab. 2:4. • Law and faith aren’t opposed to each other. But justification by both is impossible.
Argument 4 – Christ’s Redemption • He became a curse for us – Deut 21:22-23 • He assumed our sins, that’s the curse, not the tree. • Gentiles included, all sin – Rom. 3:9-10, 23 • By faith. • Where is our faith? Sometimes too much in Christ. Sometimes too much in self.
