West Africa Chapter 13 Section 1
Background • The earliest known inhabitants were called Nok. • Has the most people of any other African nation with 134 million. • Its largest city is Lagos
Nigeria • Gets its name from the Niger River • Twice the size of California • Mangrove – tropical tree with roots that extend both above and beneath the water • Located on the lowlands along the coast
CACAO Seeds are used to make chocolate and coco.
Nigeria • Past the coast, there are miles of tropical rain forest • Then, there are savannas – tropical grasslands with only a few trees • Climate – high temperatures and seasonal rains • Harmattan – wind from the Sahara during winter months • The Sahara Desert covers most of North Africa
Nigeria • Produces a lot of OIL (90% of income), largest export • 1980s – people left farms to search for better paying jobs, crops never harvested • Had to import food to feed people
Nigeria • Contains 25 different ethnic groups • Speak many different languages but speak English in business and government • Most of West Africans are Muslim
Nigeria • Family – men go off to the cities and work while the women farm the land and raise the children • 1960 – became independent from Britain • 1999 – first time Nigerians were able to vote for president in free elections
