Key messages from State of the Region Report 2006 • The BSR has benefited from globalization but this effect is slowly receding, raising the need to confront the challenges of a sparsely populated region • The BSR achieves stronger economic growth than other regions, but its performance on world markets and investment attraction is less impressive • The BSR is among the most competitive locations in the world, but some non-EU countries have been more effective in upgrading competitiveness • A wide range of efforts to improve competitiveness are under way in the BSR, better integration into a consistent strategy could strengthen the effectiveness
