From here, she could daydream about starring in a movie one day. Beth sat back and listened. She could hear birds singing and the whir of the saw out in Grandpa’s toolshed. Beth’s grandpa worked very hard. He made wooden swings for other people. The money he got helped pay for food and other things for her grandparents.

  13. Where did Beth sit? • Name two things Beth did while she was swinging. • Why didn’t Beth’s grandparents buy her a plane ticket to California so she could try out for a movie role? • Where is a special place you like to go?

  14. As soon as she heard the familiar tune, Kendall sat straight up in bed and looked at the clock. She could not believe she almost slept through her favorite moment of the entire week. She leaped out of bed and pulled on a pair of jeans and an old shirt. Barely glancing at her reflection in the mirror, she quickly pulled her hair into a ponytail. Then she looked in her drawer for her money. “Oh, no!” she exclaimed. “What’s happened to the money I had in that drawer? If I don’t find it, I won’t be able to enjoy my favorite treat.” “Maybe I left the money in my book bag.” Grabbing her bag as she ran out the door toward the street and the truck, she promised herself she would not take a nap anymore after her Wednesday classes.
