SITS integration with Blackboard in a Federal HE context; Management perspective on what is ‘advanced’ now Nancy Turner Associate Dean: Professional Development University of the Arts, London
What I did summer 2007 and why… • Nancy Turner • Associate Dean: Professional Development • University of the Arts, London
Before 2007 • some use of VLE • manual process of student • enrolment • No management centrally of creation, enrolments or ‘clean-up’ of system – user request lead
2007 VLE integrated with Student Records System
2007 • Allow for growth of use of e-learning and VLE beyond current capacity limited by staff manual entry • Reduce errors in course creation and enrolment and improve staff/student experience
2007 Course file QL Student account file Enrolment file VLE Staff account file Staff Records System Key: Existing databases Flat files
QL 2007 Course creation file Course Mapping Table Enrolment file E-mail Look-up Table Student account file VLE Custom Authentication LDAP Mapping -students Staff account file E-Directory Key: Existing databases Mapping tables Flat files processes
Efficiencies Enhancement Transformation
2008 • Policy for required minimum course content • Possible for students to access VLE prior to enrolment
Establish the minimum requirements for all courses on Blackboard to provide equity in the student course experience • Provide easy access for students to relevant course documents
2009 • Policy requiring VLE site for all courses
Enhance communication between course teams and students • Establish the minimum requirements for all courses on Blackboard to provide equity in the student course experience • Provide easy access for students to relevant course documents
2009 2008 746 course sites 2007 455 course sites 315 course sites
Overall use • * Each course is created through an automated process with a standard 25 content items • ** September to March 2010
Key points • Strategic drivers at all points along the way • Needs not technology based • Institutional investment • Institutional support
New challenges • Control of processes • Streamlined VLE? • Increasing costs and demands but decreasing financial resource • Is real transformation the future?
