Assessment of where we are • Global Wind Velocity Profiles are Vitally Needed- #1observational requirement for improving global weather forecasts • No current US Mission • Technology not available • Planned international missions won’t meet NOAA requirements • However, useful technology demonstrations

Earth Observation Summit Draft Declaration is expected to support: • The exchange of observations recorded from in situ, aircraft, and satellite networks in a full and open manner with minimum time delay and minimum cost; • The concept of an international, comprehensive, integrated, and sustained Earth observation system that will meet collective requirements for observations, minimize data gaps, and maximize the utility of the system; • Establishment of an Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Working Group to prepare a 10-year implementation plan for an international, comprehensive, integrated and sustained Earth observation system, with the plan being available within one year for discussion and subsequent adoption; and, • A unified effort to improve observing systems in developing countries and advance the capacity building of local scientific expertise. Questions that keep coming up • How can we be sure DWL is the proper technical solution for global tropospheric wind profiles? • How do we interpret different OSSE results? • How do we make sure the NWP community will benefit from wind profiles as soon as the data are available? Recommendation- the Space-Based Doppler Wind Lidar working group should agree on standard answers for these and other questions (FAQ sheet)
