1870 • Buffalo hunters move onto the plains because of the expansion of the railroads. The buffalo population continues to decrease.
1870 • Railroad companies begin advertising to attract settlers to the West. They sent agents with pamphlets that talked about how rich the soil was, and how good the climate was.
1871 • 100 Apache (most of them women and children) are killed outside Camp Grant, Arizona, where they had been given asylum, by the Papago Indians.
1871 • Indian Appropriations Act is passed. Says that all Indians should be treated as individuals and legally designated “wards” of federal government. (Better treatment)
1874 • Gold is found in the Black Hills and the Sioux Indians are pushed out.
1876 • Authorities order Lakota chiefs to go to their reservations by January 31. The Lakota Chiefs refuse and there is major conflict.
1877 • Crazy Horse surrenders to General George Crook at Ft. Robinson Nebraska because Crook said that Crazy Horse and his followers can settle in Powder River country of Montana.
1877 • Chief Joseph of the Nez Pearce surrenders to General Oliver Howard.
1877 • Desert Land Act, which lets settlers purchase up to 640 acres for $.25 per acre is passed through congress.
1877 • Congress repeals 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty and regain the Black Hills, including 40 million more acres of Lakota Land.
