Winding down an organisation Celebrate the past and the organisation’s contribution to the local NHS Agree and communicate the winding down strategy Conduct a human resources and organisation impact assessment Set clear project/task objectives for short and medium term Establish project/ task based teams so the workforce can identify with something tangible Manage the transition of staff to other organisations and exit of others Merging and integrating organisations Appoint a Senior Restructuring Officer from within one of the merging organisations who understands the legacy identities Identify the cultural, organisational design, clinical practice and other challenges to integration. Allow individuals and groups the space to let go of the legacy organisation identities Appoint leadership that reflects the aspired identity of the merged organisation as soon as the integration is announced Build the new organisation’s identity through an engagement programme, branding and launch events Build task and project teams that cross legacy organisation boundaries to embed the new identity Creating a new organisation Hire leadership aligned with the vision and strategy of the new organisation being careful not to signal a reinvention of the ‘old’. Agree and articulate the identity the organisation aspires to internally and externally Design the organisation with this identity in mind Embed the identity in working practices Use performance management to embed behaviours Design the external brand Communicate the brand for different stakeholders Basic principles: Communicate and engage with internal and external stakeholders to build the new identity
