Security is responsible for: • Maintaining a safe and secure learning and working environment • Staff consists of an Operations Supervisor, a Security Systems Specialist and 30 Contract Security Officers for Paragon Security • Issuing parking permits and enforcement • Crime prevention on campus • Safety in the community • Good relationship with Hamilton police • Promote good relations between students and neighbors

  12. Things you should know…. Emergency Lockdown • Triggered by internal threat • Alert by security broadcast on campus PA system and internal TV screens • Text, Voice and email alerts from SAM together with ‘popups’ on computer screens to augment the communication • What you should do: • Get to a safe place (office/classroom), lock door, turn out lights and stay quiet (turn off cell phones) • Leave the building if you can and get away from the campus

  13. Things you should know…. Hold and Secure • Triggered by an external threat • College alerted by Police • Lock down campus (no one in or out) until threat has passed Fire Alarm • Audible alarm • Leave the building immediately by nearest exit • Reenter after all-clear has been given

  14. Things you should know…. • We work very closely with Diane Harrison, Manager of Student Rights and Responsibilities to manage Student Behavior issues • If you experience student behavior outside your own expected ‘norms’ tell us as soon as you can • Trust your instincts and 'move it out’

  18. 2013-2014 MSA Board Introductions The MSA consists of 13 full time students, who sit on our board of directors. We have 12 full time staff and hire over 100 students each year. We have offices at all campuses. Full time President, Ryan Chow.

  19. Mission Statement The Mohawk Student’s Association exists for the betterment of all full-time fee paying students of Mohawk College. Proudly offering quality services, activities and facilities designed to satisfy the ever changing needs of all members and all campuses. We’re here to support students outside the classroom!

  20. We’re NOT just pub nights! We advocate and represent students on all issues. We are here for their benefit.

MSA Services Health & Dental Plan • Students pay an annual fee ($170) for 70-100% coverage (prescriptions/dental/optical, etc.) • Easy claims online or in our Health Plan Office (G110) • Used to be $11/year and could only recover 70% of prescriptions The current plan is far more robust! www.ihaveaplan.ca or connect through MSA Social

MSA Services cont’d Text Book Sale • Facilitated through MSA Social on “Books/For Sale” tab • Students can post, buy and sell online and meet in the halls Used to be a physical sale in the MSA office (not student friendly).   27. Facilities Food Services • The MSA operates all food services in the Student Centre • Switch from being dollar focused to value focused • Used to use third party franchises, but we now operate 100% ourselves

  30. Facilities Computer Tech Repair (Sept. 2013) • We’ve renovated the Clubs Room G008 and are making way for a Tech Repair Facility • Students will be able to have electronics serviced on-site (cheaper than Big Box stores) • It will be an Apple certified repair facility (on-site)

  31. Upcoming Campaigns • We are the only fully composting facility on campus • We, long with the College, have eliminated single use refillable water bottles • Sustainability continues to be a core value of the MSA
