The Purim Story Celebrates story of Queen Esther Comes from the Book of Esther (the “Megilla”) 14th of Adar – Feb. 28, 2010 Anniversary of the Jews successful defense against Haman
Celebrations • The story of Esther, the Megilla, is to be read aloud each year. • By 18th c, reading evolved into satires with music and dance • Feasting • Noisemaking (groggers) every time the name “Haman” is mentioned.
Women and the MegillaHalacha • Women have an obligation to hear the Megilla, since a woman, Esther, was involved in the miracle. • Orthodox communities generally do not allow women to lead the reading.
Giving of Food, Gifts and Charity • The book of Esther says, “the sending of portions from one man to another, and gifts to the poor” (9:22) • Each Jew over the age of 13 performs this mitzvah • Even the poorist Jew is obligated to give to other poor people
Masquerading • The concept of masquerading is a recent addition to Purim, added sometime in the last 500 years. • Mistaken identity plays an important role in the book of Esther. • Hidden / revealed – where is G-d in the Megilla?
The Story of Purim • King Ahashverosh and Queen Vashti • Esther becomes the new queen
The Story of Purim • Mordecai saves king from assassination, recorded in the Court Records • The king appoints Haman as Prime Minister • Mordecai refuses to bow down to Haman • Haman plots to kill Mordecai and all Jews in Persia.
The Story of Purim • Haman casts “lots”, or Purim, to determine the date of the attack • Esther asks the king and Haman to a feast
The Story of Purim • King asks that his Court Records be read, remembers Mordecai as the man that saved his life • Esther reveals her Jewish roots to the king and reveals Haman’s plan to kill all the Jews. • The king hangs Haman • We win the battle against armies.
The Purim Play • We will re-enact the Esther story this evening by performing a play. • Costumes, masks, noisemakers
