Riddle!!!! List of Components Valve Fluid Hoses Pump Motor Cylinder Reservoir Filter Accumulator • I can take any shape you want me to. • I am simple enough that almost anyone could build me • I can be high, low or placed almost any where & have little or no affect on the work • I can be invisible or at least you don't know where I may be • I am the one component that you can do without. • I give rest to a tired fluid
Hydraulics Reservoirs and Coolers
Objectives • 1. State the functions of a reservoirs. • 2. List the parts of a common reservoir. • 3. List several design features that promote the functions of the reservoir. • 4. Draw the schematic symbols for a reservoir.
Functions of Reservoirs • a. Hold fluid #1 purpose • b. Where fluid can cool down • c. Where air can separate from fluid • d. Contaminates can be removed or settle
Secondary Functions • a. Part of frame -- tractor • b. Ballast – side mount bush hog • c. Mounting platform -- pump, filter or other components
Trick Question • Does everything that is hydraulic need a reservoir? Why? Or Why Not? • Hydrostatic systems __ yes _X_ no __ Maybe • Ram type cylinders __ yes _X_ no _x_ Maybe
Design features of a Reservoir • 1. Off floor • 2. Heavy metal plate • 3. Cupped (oval) bottom • 4. Inside sealed with anti- rust • 5. Has glass check instead of dip stick or remove cover • 6. Screen in fill hole
Design features continued….. • 7. Higher flow rate larger breather needed • 8. Air valve used on non vented systems • 9. Baffle plate separate the incoming from out-going. Prevents turbulence, which allows foreign materials to settle, helps dissipate heat through walls • 10. Lines - Pump inlet lines must be well below the fluid level, this keeps the fluid from air.
Design features continued….. • 11. Lines that end near the bottom need to be cut at 45 degree. • 12. Size -- Rule of thumb 2-3 gallons for each gpm tank size in gallons = pump gpm x 2 or 3 need room for expansion of fluid system demand. • Pump delivers 10 GMP what should be the reservoir size • Answer = 20-30 gallons • 13. Heaters below fluid level 10 watts /cubic inch • How many cubic inches in a gallon? 231 • What size heater for the 20 gal reservoir is needed • 231 x 20 = 4620 or a 5000 watt heater
