Vocabulary • Bias: A particular tendency or inclination, especially one that prevents unprejudiced consideration of a question. • Coup: A group (i.e.. Military) taking power by force • Referendum: is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to either accept or reject a proposal. • Socialist: one who advocates or practices socialism • Austerity: enforced or extreme economy • Pardoned: to absolve from the consequences of a fault or crime
Chavez History • Come to prominence in 1992 after a failed military coup. • Six years later was elected President of Venezuela. • He has since won many elections, referendums including one that changing the constitution to allow unlimited presidential terms. • He is running for President once more in October 2012. It is presumed he will win.
Socialist Revolution • Occurred in 1992 • Chavez led a group to overthrow the government due to economic austerity measures • The coup failed and Chavez gave himself up. • Nine months latter his group tried once more and failed • Chavez spent two years in prison until he was pardoned. • Launched his political party Movement of the Fifth Republic.
Clash • By 1998 Chavez swept the elections the old government was falling apart. • Venezuela had enjoyed an unbroken period of Democracy since 1958 • Chavez promised revolutionary social policies • He often clashes with church leaders saying they do not do much for the poor. • Chavez started to tighten his control on people freedom of speech. Venezuelans are not happy about this.
USA/Venezuela Relationship • Chavez blames the USA on a coup in 2002 that saw him lose power for two days. • US State department denies any action in the coup. • Chavez accused the Bush administration of ‘fighting Terror with Terror’ during the early days of the War in Afghanistan. • 2008 Chavez called and congratulated Obama on winning the election. Indicating that Venezuela wants to start a new more positive chapter with the USA.
