GIS Tools for Emission Inventories Air Protection Cross Branch Seminar May 13,2004 Tony Wakelin, Air Protection Section
Two Systems • Air Contaminant Emissions (ACE) for Area and Mobile Sources • Air and Emissions Information of British Columbia (AEI) – Web Based System
ACE - Background • GOAT – GIS Oracle Access Tool • Spatial and attribute exploration and reporting - Airshed specific • Uses 1995 data – plan to upload with year 2000 • BC excluding the LFV
ACE • System • GOAT Maps • Gridding • Airshed Selection - Quesnel • Reporting - Oracle Discoverer • Data Drill Down • Data Dictionary
ACE - Gridding • 1 km or 5 km grid squares • BC Albers projection – simplicity and coherence with BC gov standards
ACE - Data Dictionary • Describes how various spatial data sets were used for 1 km and 5 km gridding • Example – Residential heating • 9 ecoprovinces defined by EC (Quesnel – Central Interior) • Average temperature data Oct to Mar • Relative thermal factors
AEI • Web based system (Arc IMF) • Point, Wildfire, and Prescribed Burning • Ambient Monitoring Sites • Have demonstration site • Working on Government data model – allows Oracle update to be carried into GIS
End Uses? • Airshed Management Planning • Dispersion Modelling • State of Environment Reporting • Information Requests
Future Directions • Web based system has merits and ACE could be migrated over • Common multi-agency platform is in the process of being developed by EC, GVRD and WLAP • Going to need better spatial data (vehicle emissions)
