  8. The High Desert: less than 60 miles from the inner city schools located in San Bernardino County. Many families are moving to the High desert: for affordable homes, new jobs, access to equality schools and better education for their kids

  9. West Creek Elementary • brand new school • located in a developing area • New homes being built around the school • Home cost beginning in the low 300s- high 400s • Home sites average 7000 sq. ft. lots, with plans beginning in the 1900s up to over 4000 sq ft homes

  10. Adelanto School District: • 10 school sites in 2005 • out 10 schools 8 did not meet the states standards and are receiving Title I funding and four schools are PI. • 2007: 12 school sites in the district and the progress remains the same. • Questions: are the schools, jobs and housing worth moving to the High Desert?

Areas of Concern • ELL Students –language, poverty, culture • Safety Issues –Traffic, Ingate campus • Strengths • Early Identification – Analyzing Data (CELDT, STAR, CAT 6), Health Screening, SST. • Resiliency Programs –ELAP, Dance Club, Essential Skills, Intervention Classes, GATE. • Student Attendance Support- School Wide Attendance Program -Weekly, Monthly, Trimester. • Family involvement models- SST, ELAC, CBET, PESA, PAT. • Communication- News Letter, Chat with the Principal, Edconnect • Reading Coach.

  13. Summary of the Project • Community mapping is beneficial to ALL teachers, especially those who do not live in the area • This experience takes us out of our comfort zone and opens our eyes to the lifestyle that surrounds our students
