Some months ago, I applied to model at a catwalk show for a company exhibiting at London Alternative Fashion Week. They wanted girls of my age and size (14-16) and these were pretty much their only requests.I emailed and expressed my interest, explaining that I need to walk with a crutch but was otherwise entirely fit for the job, and within a few days they'd got back to me.The rejection letter reads: "Unfortunately we feel that your mobility issues would be a big problem for the event as the stage has *massive* and steep steps up to it, and to be honest it would take the focus away from the clothes and we do want the event to be about the clothing and not the models wearing them really. Sorry to be blunt about it, but there's no point in beating around the bush we feel and wasting your time."I see their point, but if they don't want the focus to be on the models, why have models?Anyway, ten days later I found an agency that was quite content to take me on and I'm waiting for my first assignment. I think it's time to show the world what we're made of, don't you?
I may be missing an eye and severely physically impaired, but sometimes I think I see more clearly that so many others – that disabled people cannot be ignored. It’s more than OK to feature them in advertising – it’s needed and it’s time.
