  2. Maquahuitl • A maquahuitl is compared to the sword • Made from wood • 3 to 4” long • 3 to 4” wide • Embedded in the edges was obsidian or flint • The maquahuitl are incredibly strong • The Spanish said they can chop a horse head off with one blow

  3. Clubs • The cuauhololli was a mace made of wood with a ball at the end • It could be used to smash and crush • Various other types of clubs were commonly used sometimes just made of wood and others with embedded stone as the maquahuitl

  4. Spears • They are extremely sharp • Some were over 7 feet long • These spears were sharp enough to shave • Spears were used in Mexico a long time before the Aztec empire

  5. Atlatl • The Aztec artists often drew the gods holding an atlatl • Atlatls often had a symbolic significance, and some were made with great artistry • Parts were made from oak, single pointed with obsidian or flint, or even copper or bone • The propelled darts tended to be more powerful than arrows

  6. Bows and Arrows • The bows were about 5 feet long • The arrows were pointed with flint, bone or obsidian, and kept in a quiver • It is believed that the arrows could fly 450 feet or more • As with all their weapons, the Aztecs were very skilled in using the and arrow

  7. Slings • The sling was made with fibers from the maguey plant. • The slings were used to send flying stones at the enemy. • They could significant damage to a soldier in a full metal armor. • Stones would be prepared before battle. • The stones could be shot over 650 feet.
