  3. Holden’s Childhood • Innocence sexually • Recklessly spends money • Does not think of future • Can relate better to children • Wants attention and pity • Wanted to take off with Sally

  4. Holden’s Adulthood • Knowledge of phoniness • Drinking and smoking • Curious about sex • Care for little kids • Emotional Issues • Independent

  5. Symbol of Transition From Childhood to Adulthood • Lake - Half frozen over (change) - Water = Childhood - Ice = Adulthood - Completely frozen over = water still on the inside. - Ducks flying south - Asking about where they go - Does not knowing where he is going himself
