  2. Media Center Staff • The Westmoore Media Center has two media specialists and one media assistant. You will be assisting all of us throughout the semester. • Mrs. Bailey – Media Specialist • Mrs. McReynolds– Media Specialist • Mrs. Sanders – Media Assistant

  3. The Four Big Ones • To be successful in this class, you must do the following: • Be on time every day! • Wear your id every day! • Follow dress code every day! • Always leave your cell phone turned off and put away during class!

  4. Circulation Procedures • A student must have a valid student ID in order to check out library books in the Westmoore Media Center. • A student may check out up to three library books at one time. • A student may keep his/her library books for three weeks at a time.

  5. Circulation Procedures • If a student is not finished with his/her library book, he/she may renew the book for additional time. • If a student returns his/her library book late, he/she may have to pay a fine. • The fine is 10 cents per day per book. • The maximum fine is $ 1.00 per book.

  6. Check Out Procedures • The following steps should be followed when checking out a book: • Look at the student id to verify the students identity and, while on the check out screen, scan the barcode on the back of the ID. • Scan the barcode on the front cover of the book. ** see the note on the following page ** • Open the book and stamp the due date on the slip inside the front cover. • Use the machine to desensitize the book.

  7. Check Out Procedures Something to watch for when you are scanning books ** A student may not check out a book if he/she has an overdue book or a fine. A warning notice will pop up on the screen. You should not complete the transaction unless the student returns the overdue book or pays the fine. **

  8. Check In Procedure • The following steps should be followed when checking in a book: • While on the check in screen, scan the barcode on the front cover of the book. • Use the machine to sensitize the book. • Place the book in the proper location on the shelving cart.

  9. The Book Drop • The book drop is the place where students return their library books. • The book drop is located by the front doors of the media center. • You should check the book drop at the beginning of the hour every day. • All books in the book drop should be checked in and placed in the proper location on the shelving cart.

  10. The Shelving Cart • The shelving cart is where books are placed after they have been checked in. • The shelving cart is located near the circulation desk. • You should check the shelving cart at the beginning of the hour every day. • You should shelve all of your books that are on the shelving cart each and every day.

  11. Assigned Shelves • Each student will be assigned a particular set of shelves. • It is your responsibility to shelve all of your books that are on the shelving (return) cart every day. • You should also check your shelves daily and make certain that they are neat and tidy. • Remember, if your shelves are a mess or out of order, it will be difficult for students to locate books.

  12. Assignments • Library Science students will be expected to complete various assignments. • These assignments will be related to the daily operation of the media center, reading or information literacy skills. • All assignments will be given on Monday and due on Friday, unless otherwise stated. • Late assignments will be reflected in the grade. • You will need to make up any assignments that you miss due to absence.

  13. Book Reports • Every Library Science student will be required to read at least two books for the semester – one each nine weeks. • Each student will be required to complete a book talk or other assignment for each book. More information will be given closer to due dates. • The book report due dates for Fall semester are: • October 9 • May 7

  14. Participation Grade • A twenty-point participation grade will be given each day. To earn your points, you must do the following: • Wear your id. • Check the book drop for any books that need to be checked in. • Shelve all of your books on the return cart and straighten your section. • Complete all tasks assigned to you for the hour.

  15. Shelf Check • Each Library Science student will be responsible for an assigned shelf area. • Each student is personally responsible for the appearance and proper shelving of all materials in that area on a daily basis. • Periodic shelf checks will be done to assure the shelves are being maintained in the proper order. • A grade will be given based on the condition of the shelves in your section.

  16. Grading Scale • The following grading scale will be utilized for this class • Daily grades (90%) • Semester Test (10%)

  17. Other Things To Remember • Library Science students are not allowed to have food or drink at the circulation desk. • Library Science students may not use their phones during class. • Library Science students should never leave the media center without permission.
