They were very surprised when they found out what we were going to do with them for the following two days!!
Domo arigato gozaimasu to Amaco for their kind donation of glazes to our project.
Day 2 Waiting for the wind and rain to stop
One Kiln load done, and a second one is almost ready when the principal calls and orders all students into the building:Strong winds approaching! Our Florida high crew stays behind to pull the second load of pots out.
After a two hour “lunch break” the sun has come out and we head out to fire up the kiln again!
Day 3 Our last day to fire with the St. Martins crew Today they will handle the burner and the kiln.
Today we’re set up in a courtyard so students can watch without going out into the rain

Hello, My name is Guy and I’m from Mississippi and I go to St. Martins High School. I wanted to say thank you for providing us with the ability to raku pots. Your donation is greatly appreciated. We all really enjoyed lighting stuff on fire on purpose. I made a lot of new friends (the students were all really nice, and helpful.) Thank you, Guy PS: Sorry that is so sloppy I’m not very good at cursive.
The experience was great! I got to raku one of my pots. It turned out so cool looking. The kids that came down were really nice & they helped out with a lot around the class. I greatly appreciate the donations. Olivia
The visit from the students of Florida State University School has had a positive influence on my academic life. The experiences that St. Martin students have gained from this visit will broaden their perspective on art altogether. I have learned to use a raku kiln as well as gained a better understanding on the culture of another state. I know as the president of the Ceramics Club at St. Martins that I’ll use my newly acquired knowledge to further expand the creative and artistic characteristics of my school and all of Mississippi. Thanks for coming! I hope to see you again! Caleb G. President, Ceramics Club Future Politician!!
Well I really appreciate y’all coming out and donating the free kiln to our school. Also, you taught me. As well as others, to fire pots in such a unique way. Because of you my fellow students and I are able to fire pots like this for years to come. Thanks again for taking time out of your life to come to our area and teach us something new. Sincerely, Tyler PS: Even though the weather didn’t hold up, we still had a blast firing pots with all of you!!
